GLAAD Media Awards Honor Behar and Nixon

Joy Behar and Cynthia Nixon were among the honorees at the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation’s media awards in New York on Saturday night. The top award for excellence in media was presented to Ms. Behar, a host of “The View” on ABC and “The Joy Behar Show” on the HLN network, for her contributions to increasing the visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
Ms. Nixon received the Vito Russo Award, given to an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender media professional who has promoted equal rights. Honors also went to ABC’s “Brothers and Sisters” for outstanding drama series, and Lifetime’s “Prayers for Bobby,” starring Sigourney Weaver and Ryan Kelley, above, for outstanding television movie or mini-series. Other winners included Colman Domingo’s “Boy and His Soul,” for Broadway and Off Broadway theater, and The New York Times, which received an award for overall newspaper coverage, as well as prizes for the writers Frank Rich, Tara Parker-Pope and Benoit Denizet-Lewis.

GLAAD Media Award recipients were announced in 24 of this year's 32 media categories at the 21st Annual GLAAD Media Awards presented in New York by IBM and Prudential at the Marriott Marquis on Saturday, March 13. Additional awards will be presented in Los Angeles on April 17 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, and in San Francisco on June 5 at the Westin St. Francis.
